Reset Your Expectations: Five Heart Positions for Planning with God
As we enter planning season, it’s easy to rely on strategy, spreadsheets, and hustle. But Jesus reminds us that real clarity and direction come from His voice. Recently the Holy Spirit prompted me to “reset your expectations,” and I believe He’s inviting all of us into the same realignment.
In Luke 7, five people approach Jesus with five different expectation postures. As you plan your year, ask: “Which one am I living from?”
1. Expectation Rooted in Authority – Like the centurion, you believe God can move. Keep dreaming big and deepen your connection with Him.
2. Expectation That Has Died – Like the widow of Nain, something important may have died this year. Let Jesus touch what you buried and resurrect hope.
3. Expectation Confused – Like John the Baptist, you may feel disappointed or stuck. Tell Jesus honestly, then rehearse what He has done.
4. Expectation Grown Familiar – Like Simon the Pharisee, routine may have replaced hunger. Break the pattern: attend something, read something, stretch again.
5. Expectation Limited by Shame – Like the woman with the alabaster jar, you may feel disqualified. Jesus forgives, restores, and invites you to dream again.
As you plan 2026, ask the Holy Spirit:
1. What expectation am I living from?
2. What’s your invitation, and what's my next step?
You’re not planning alone. The God who resurrects dreams, lifts confusion, breaks apathy, and restores dignity is leading you.
