What If Walking With God at Work Was Normal?

What would it look like to have a normal relationship with God in your place of work?

Not simply reading your Bible before the workday begins. Not adding a prayer meeting to the calendar or hosting a lunchtime Bible study. Those things can be valuable—but what about the everyday decisions?

Hiring. Firing. Cash flow. Production problems. Strategy. Conflict. Growth. Giving. Expansion.

That is how Bill Job learned to build businesses. Bill spent more than three decades living and working in China, where he helped establish three distinct companies and nine production lines, employing between 200 and 650 people during different seasons. Through those companies, approximately $77 million was distributed in salaries, while millions more were given toward Kingdom purposes.

Yet Bill did not begin with business training, access to significant capital, or a sophisticated strategic plan. He began by learning to recognize what he calls God’s accent.

Learning God’s Accent

Bill became a Christian at 21 and later served in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in the Philippines, he was eager to get busy doing ministry. But God interrupted him. Bill sensed the Lord saying, “You are so busy, the two of us have no time together.”

The invitation was simple: spend five minutes talking—and five minutes listening.

At first, it felt awkward. Bill realized he understood religious activities, but he did not yet have a framework for an actual relationship with God.

Over the following months, however, he began to recognize God’s voice. He learned that hearing God is not a spiritual trick reserved for a few exceptional people. It is fundamental to relationship.

In Bill’s words, we are learning to have a normal relationship with someone who happens to be “inconveniently invisible.”

That normal relationship eventually led Bill and his family to China. When the laws changed and the opportunity arose to establish a company, Bill asked God what to do, received clarity, and moved forward.

He did not know much about business. But he knew how to listen.

God Is King, Not a Consultant

One of the greatest challenges for Christian business leaders is that we can easily treat God as a consultant.

We may value His advice. We may even ask for it regularly. But consultants make recommendations; kings give direction.

A consultant’s advice can be considered, adapted, or ignored. A king’s word carries authority.

Bill’s experience in business taught him more about the Kingdom of God than his years of formal theological education. A company is an entity being led and governed. The Kingdom is also an entity led and governed by a King.

When God is King over the business we steward, faith and work no longer compete with one another. They become a natural partnership.

The question shifts from:

“God, will You bless what I have decided to build?”

to:

“God, what are You building, and how do I participate?”

That shift changes how we approach ownership, people, profit, pressure, and opportunity.

Bill once gave away one of his businesses because he believed God directed him to do so.

Why? Because, as he explained, “It was never mine.” That is the language of stewardship.

Clarity Makes Obedience Possible

Bill offered a simple principle:

“If you have clarity, obedience is the natural thing to follow. If you don’t have clarity, push in for clarity. Our job is to listen; His job is clarity.”

Many leaders become stuck because they feel pressure to act before they have clarity. Others wait passively, expecting God to provide a complete five-year plan before they take one step. A relational approach does neither. It keeps asking. It keeps listening. It remains responsive.

Sometimes the next instruction is strategic and significant. At other times it is surprisingly small.

• Ask an employee how their son is doing.
• Encourage someone who is struggling. 
• Touch a person on the shoulder.
• Tell someone they are doing a good job.

Bill discovered that these small promptings created a culture in which people felt deeply loved. Years after he left one company, employees were still talking about the way he had cared for them. Bill was not striving to become the most loving leader in China. He was learning to abide in Christ—and responding to the quiet nudges that came from that relationship.

Abide Before You Strive

Christian leadership can become exhausting when we try to manufacture the fruit of God without remaining connected to God's life.

We try harder to love people.

We try harder to demonstrate integrity.

We try harder to make an impact in the Kingdom.

Bill’s advice is different:

“Don’t take it as a goal to try to love people. Take it as a goal to abide in Christ. He loves them.”

Our job is not to perform the heavy lifting of transformation. Our job is to remain connected.

God provides the wisdom, love, and timely instruction. We become the visible partner through whom His invisible leadership is expressed.

This does not make leadership passive. It makes leadership responsive.

You still need to understand finances, operations, culture, hiring, sales, legal structure, and strategy. But you no longer carry those responsibilities alone. The King is present.

The Kingdom Can Go Anywhere

Many Christian leaders unconsciously measure Kingdom impact primarily through church attendance, ministry programs, or financial donations. Those things matter—but the Kingdom is much larger. As Bill observed, you may not be able to put a church service inside every factory, but you can put the Kingdom into anything.

The Kingdom can be expressed through:

• The way employees are treated
• The quality of products and services
• The decisions leaders make under pressure
• The stewardship of profit
• The development of people
• The atmosphere of the workplace
• The businesses and initiatives that are multiplied through others

Some of the greatest fruit from Bill’s life came when employees learned to hear God for themselves. Several eventually left to start businesses, plant churches, or serve in other communities because they had received their own assignments from God. That is multiplication. It is not persuading people to copy your model. It is helping them connect directly to the Head, hear their own assignment, and faithfully obey.

Stop Limiting God to the Quiet Time

A protected time of prayer is valuable. But God does not remain in the chair when you stand up to begin your day.

He is present during the meeting.

He is present during the difficult conversation.

He is present when the numbers do not work.

He is present when the opportunity seems too large.

He is present at your elbow throughout the entire day.

The invitation is to develop a habit of checking in.

“God, what are You saying?”

“Is there something I am missing?”

“How do You see this person?”

“What is my next step?”

“What are You building here?”

This is not meant to become another religious performance. It is the natural rhythm of relationship.

Talk.

Listen.

Respond.

Repeat.
