Hack Your Culture: Rewire Mindsets for Kingdom Impact
Jul 23, 2025
What if the biggest obstacle to your growth isn’t your strategy… but your subconscious?
Last week, I attended what might be the most effective and comprehensive workshop I’ve ever experienced on understanding, recognizing, and changing culture—starting with the culture in you. Hosted by Excellent Cultures in Dallas, Texas, this event tied together years of wisdom from city transformation leaders, neuroscience, business case studies, and Kingdom principles.
Here’s what I learned—and what you can apply immediately.
Listen to the podcast here.
Your Brain is Leading Your Culture
Your subconscious brain processes 11 million bits of information per second. Your conscious brain? Just 40 to 60. That means most of what shapes your decisions, emotions, and leadership is running in the background.
This is why culture—defined as “the lived-out beliefs that govern your behavior”—is largely determined by what you believe when you’re not thinking about it.
Romans 12:2 calls it out: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” If we want to change culture—in ourselves, in our business, in our community—we must learn how to hack our subconscious and align it with Kingdom truth.
The Culture Monster is Real
At the workshop, we used a visual called “The Culture Monster” - that gremlin of selfishness and comfort that lures us into passive or aggressive behaviors. Left unchecked, this monster destroys trust, disempowers teams, and causes businesses to drift.
The solution? Intentional, constructive leadership styles that lead to win-win environments.
We assessed our current tendencies using an in-depth leadership metric (I recommend you try it with your team). Then, we anchored our goals to values and practiced how to “lock on” to what we want to build—with affirmations, repetition, community, and accountability.
High-Performance Culture Starts with Practice
Think of elite military jet teams or Olympic bobsled crews. They don't rely on conscious thinking in a crisis, they’ve practiced so many times that the right move is automatic.
You can do the same.
Here’s how:
Rewire your subconscious with truth: “I hate the effect of sugar, but I love a disciplined body.” (Yes, I’m using that to lose 'fluffy' and get back to endurance running post knee surgery!)
Tie your goals to values so your motivation sticks long-term.
Build your plan in community, not isolation.
Want a disciplined culture? Start by showing up as a disciplined leader.
