Word at Work: 40-Year Case Study
Apr 29, 2026
Most business leaders don’t struggle with activity; they struggle with alignment.
They’re busy. Driven. Disciplined. Even faithful. But underneath it all, something’s off. That’s where this conversation begins. Andy Mason sits down with “Coach Bill,” a high-performance, goal-driven businessman who spent 40+ years building companies, raising a family, and ultimately exiting a multimillion-dollar business. But that’s not the story. The real story is what almost happened.

The Setup: Doing Everything “Right”
Bill wasn’t drifting.
He was:
- Disciplined
- Tithing
- Reading the Bible daily
- On track to take over the family business
Fifteen minutes with God every morning. Check the box. Move on. By most standards? He was winning. But then God interrupted.
The Wake-Up Call: 30 Days of Conviction
For 30 consecutive nights, Bill had the same dream: He reached the end of his life… successful but had wasted it. Not immoral. Not rebellious. Just… misaligned. That’s confronting. Because it exposes a truth many leaders avoid: You can build something successful… and still miss your assignment.
The Shift: From Optional to Central
Then came a simple question from a mentor: “Have you ever asked God how long He wants you to spend with Him?” Bill asked. God answered: “An hour and a half.” Not passion. Not excitement. Conviction. So, he obeyed. Not because he felt it, but because he knew it was God.
The Reality: It Was Hard
Let’s be clear, this wasn’t a mountaintop moment.
Bill describes:
- Falling asleep standing up
- No emotional “high”
- No instant breakthrough
Just obedience. This is where many leaders quit. They want transformation without tension, but the Kingdom doesn’t work like that.
The Fire: When the Word Gets Tested
Then came the defining moment.
Bill had:
- A signed agreement
- Financing secured
- A clear path to take over the family business
At the final meeting, one condition was added: “You can’t share Christ during business hours.” In that moment, everything crystallized. He walked away. No backup plan. No clarity. Just obedience.
The Truth Most People Avoid
The Word of God didn’t protect him from hardship. It led him into it.
Years of:
- Financial pressure
- Uncertainty
- Starting from scratch
Even receiving money from a church benevolence fund just to buy Christmas gifts. This is where shallow theology breaks. Because: The goal isn’t comfort. The goal is formation.
The Breakthrough: Intimacy Over Outcome
Bill eventually built a successful company and exited at a high level. But when asked what he’s most grateful for, his answer is simple: “Nothing else works apart from intimately knowing God.” Not a strategy. Not hustle. Not even success. Presence.
Kingdom Principle
The Word of God is not information. It’s a Person.
“In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, NKJV)
Context
John is introducing Jesus not as a teacher, but as the living expression of God Himself.
Word Study
- Logos (Word) → divine expression, logic, revelation
Kingdom Principles
- You don’t read the Word, you encounter a Person
- Transformation comes through relationship, not repetition
Business Application
- Decision-making flows from presence, not pressure
- Clarity comes from connection, not just data
- Your greatest competitive advantage is God with you

Final Thought
You can build a business without God. But you can’t build a Kingdom life without Him.
The question isn’t: “Are you successful?” The question is: Are you aligned?
Activation Question
What would change in your business if your primary goal shifted from performance… to knowing God?
